Overview:

The programme aims to prepare students to reach their research goals. The programme consists of 8 academic hours of writing workshops and 4 personalised one-on-one tutorials on their research topics. In workshops and tutorials, students actively engage with their writing and research tutors from academics of University of Oxford or Cambridge. Each student is assigned a Teaching Assistant as a supervisor. At the end of the programme, students are able to find resources and write a well-structured research essay.

Course Structure

Academic Writing Workshops:

Workshops are delivered by Writing Tutor experienced in tutoring students and professionals at the University of Oxford on academic writing;
Workshops consist of four 90-min sessions. Additional one-on-one office hours (15-min per unit) can be booked with Writing Tutor.

Topics of the four sessions will cover:

  • Characteristics of Academic English vs General English
  • Structure of a research paper Arts/Humanities/Social Sciences
  • MPLS/ Natural Sciences
  • Academic standards in UK/US top universities i.e. dishonesty, cheating, plagiarism
  • Sentence structure and syntax
  • Academic vocabulary and register
  • Coherence and cohesion
  • Logical thinking/Discourse markers
  • What is meant by critical thinking and argumentation
  • Interpretation of findings
  • Using academic caution, i.e. hedging
  • Using sources/evidence (citation/bibliography/referencing)
  • Writing a discussion section

Research Tutorials

The four one-on-one sessions are led by Research Tutor from Oxford or Cambridge academics who has an expertise in a research area of student’s interest.

Research Tutor will offer tailored guidance on student’s research. During tutorials, students will discuss ideas and concepts, and gain valuable constructive criticism on their essays.

Tutorial time is scheduled with Research Tutor based on the progress of research.

Tutorials will cover:

  • Picking a research topic
  • Discussing the scholarship to the topic
  • Developing thesis statement
  • Comparing and contrasting ideas
  • Creating research outline and methodology

Supervision & Feedback

Teaching Assistant coordinates and facilitates students’ learning experience on a weekly basis to maximise learning outcomes.

The duties of TA include:

  • making study plans
  • supervising the progress of course work
  • offering feedback on writing assignments
  • scheduling meetings with Writing and Research Tutors
